Mojubá class – 5th of October 2015 – Jogo de Dentro variations

Music! We practiced repiques for gunga, medio and viola, also then Jogo de Dentro. I put together this video which has pandeiro, berimbau variations and atabaque (from a couple of weeks ago) for jogo de dentro:

Then we got to the part where we sing. I sang ‘Peixinhos do Mar’ – which turns out it’s not a capoeira song, but it was recorded by the amazing Milton Nascimento, and it’s generally no longer played in the capoeira roda, much like Marinheiro So, sang by Caetano Veloso – when I first trained it was sang constantly! The logic is that there are so many capoeira songs already, and if songs that don’t originate from it keep on getting played in the roda, where do we stop, where is the cut off point? This is when you realise there’s so much to Capoeira you NEVER run out of things to learn. And that’s why it’s so fascinating and engrossing.

Gente que vem de Lisboa
Gente que vem pelo mar
Laço de fita amarela
Na ponta da vela
no meio do mar

Ei nós, que viemos
De outras terras, de outro mar
Temos pólvora, chumbo e bala
Nós queremos é guerrear

Quem me ensinou a nadar
Quem me ensinou a nadar
Foi, foi marinheiro
Foi os peixinhos do mar

Ei nós, que viemos
De outras terras, de outro mar
Temos pólvora, chumbo e bala
Nós queremos é guerrear

Neil sang ‘Pé de lima, pé de limão’, and that’s a samba de roda song, it turns out:

Pé de lima, pé de limão
[Esse] amor é meu
tá dizendo que não

Muié Rendeira also got mentioned as not being really sang in the roda:

Rumour has it that Lampião himself wrote it… But I don’t think anyone knows for sure.

In the earlier body class we learned the technique for ‘relogio’, which was the last move in the first sequence, after landing in negativa: (we also practised the 2nd sequence)

The idea is to position yourself in the opposite configuration to a queda de rins, i.e. head up, legs low. And then rotate on the arm. Momentum comes from the leg and the other arm, and also the head, which should be tucked in and not facing forward. To build up to the move, wrap a cloth on the spinning hand to lessen resistance.
