A comprehensive Capoeira resource list by Dr Sara Delamont

This appendix is an annotated list of the sources that Sara and Neil have used to learn about capoeira since 2002. It is annotated in a personal idiosyncratic way. There are many items that appear in the formal bibliography but also a few that do not, especially in the DVD list. There are many websites, but these are ephemeral, and we have not listed those we have consulted here.

Several of the leading capoeira mestres and contra-mestres have published books in English. These usually give a history of capoeira, some account of current capoeira politics, some autobiography, and advice on how to learn to play capoeira.
Almeida, B. (1986) Capoeira: A Brazilian art form. (Berkeley, CA: North Atlantic Books).
B. Almeida is Mestre Acordeon who appears in the National Geographic programme ‘The Deadly Arts – Capoeira’.
Capoeira, N. (1995) The Little book of capoeira. (Berkeley, CA: North Atlantic Books).
Capoeira, N. (2002) Capoeira: Roots of the dance – fight – game. (Berkley, CA: North Atlantic Press).
Alves de Almeida, R. C. (2006) The Saga of Mestre Bimba. (North Arlington, NJ: Capoeira Legados ISBN 0 9779925-0-0). This is a biography of M. Bimba compiled by M. Itapoan (a student of Bimba’s) and endorsed by loads of big names.
Pereira de Brito, E. ( ) Foundation of Capoeira. This is a pamphlet by M. Suino, founder of Candeias.
Essìen, A. (2008) Capoeira beyond Brazil. Berkeley, CA: Blue Snake Books. Tartaniga is an African-American who teaches capoeira in the Bay Area for the group Raízes do Brasil.

Gleadhill, N. (2006) Fighting on the Beaches. Privately Printed. The diary of a man from Harlow who spent a year training with M. Gato in Brazil.
Reis, A.L.T. (2003) Subjective well-being of capoeira as physical activity. (Unpublished PhD Thesis, University of Bristol, UK)
Reis, A.L.T. (2005) Capoeira: Health and social well-being. (Brasilia: Thesaurus Editor de Brasilia Ltd.) Andre Reis taught the Beribazu class in Bristol from 2001 – 2003 (BC – before Claudio). He also taught the big Beribazu club in Warsaw, and his PhD thesis and book are about that.
Taylor, G. (2005) Capoeira: The Jogo de Angola from Luanda to Cyberspace, Vol. 1. Berkeley, CA: North Atlantic Press. This man trained at the London School and then set off to teach in Norway. This covers 500 years of capoeira history up to 1922.
Taylor, G. (2007) Capoeira: the Jogo de Angola from Luanda to Cyberspace Vol 2. BerkeleyCA: Blue Snake Books
Volume 2 addresses the rest. This has all the folklore about Besouro, Lampiao, etc. and interviews with a range of teachers including Mestre Sylvia.
Taylor, G. (2006) Capoeira 100 (Berkeley, CA Blue Snake Books). This is a lavishly illustrated guide to 100 capoeira movements.
Vieira, A.L.B.M. (2004) Capoeira and the game of life. (Lisbon: Privately Printed).
A.L.B.M. Vieira is ‘ET’ – a capoeira teacher. In this pamphlet he describes his conversion to evangelical Protestantism (when he left capoeira because it was forbidden by his Protestant Pastor) and how he came back.
Yllana, A. (2013) Son of the Sun. Privately printed in Germany. This is a novel based on the life of Mestre Railson.
B) Scholarly Books by Academic Researchers
Assuncao, M.R. (2005) Capoeira: The History of an Afro-Brazilian martial art. London: Routledge. Matthias Rohrig Assuncao is a friend of Mestre Luis Renato, and has published papers with him. He is an historian who has researched slavery, as well as capoeira. He has recently been working in Brazil on the controversial project to ‘map’ capoeira. In London he trained with M. Pastel. This book is very good on the globalisation of capoeira.

Browning, B. (1998) Infectious Rhythm. New York: Routledge.
Barbara Browning is a dance scholar, who learnt capoeira in New York in the days when M. Jelon and Mestre Loremil Machado started capoeira there. There is a long chapter about capoeira in her book called Samba, and some of her autobiography in the 1998 book.
Downey, G. (2005) Learning Capoeira New York: Oxford University Press. Greg Downey did anthropological research in capoeira angola in Salvador de Bahia.

Ickes, S. (2013) African-Brazilian Culture and Regional Identity in Bahia, Brazil. Gainesville, FI: University of Florida Press
Ickes deals with capoeira in its context in Salvador, drawing on Lewis.
Landes, R. (1947) The City of Women. New York: MacMillan. Ruth Landes did research in Salvador de Bahia in 1938-39, and was taken to a capoeira game by African-Brazilian friend Edison Carneira. Look up ‘Capoeira’ in the index to find the section.
Lewis, J.L. (1992) Ring of Liberation. (Chicago: The University of Chicago Press).
J. Lowell Lewis did anthropological research in Salvador. He learnt capoeira and this book is widely cited by capoeira people as a reliable source.
Merrell, F. (2005) Capoeira and Candomble. The author is an American, and the book is a bit ‘wacky’, and the philosophy is hard going.
Sera, James (2006). Social Hierarchy and Mobility: Capoeira in Salvador, Brazil. UMI: ProQuest: Michigan. This is a 2005 PhD thesis.
Talmon-Chvaicer, M. (2007) The Hidden History of Capoeira. Austin, TX: University of Texas Press. This got a bad review in the Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute from Roger Sansi.
Willson, M. (2010) Dance Lest we all Fall Down. Seattle: University of Washington Press. The author learnt angola in Salvador, and some of her fieldwork is in this book – especially pp 15-60. This is mostly about a school for girls she set up in Salvador, but she went there and studied angola, so a good deal of capoeira related material is ‘buried’ in it. A good read, but no index.
